Locating Account Numbers & Transfer PINs by US Carrier
To port a phone number in the US, a user typically needs to provide their account number and a number transfer PIN (sometimes called a port-out PIN) from their current (donor) carrier. Since these credentials are not always easy for users to find, we recommend surfacing carrier-specific instructions in your application. This page provides those instructions, organized by carrier.
For background on the overall porting process, see Porting in the US. For the API workflow to submit a port, see How Porting In Works.
Gigs Recommended Account Number Validation
To reduce carrier-side rejections, Gigs recommends implementing the following client-side validation on account number fields before submission.
| Carrier | Format | Length |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T | Digits only | 6–13 characters |
| Verizon | Letters and numbers (no special characters) | 1–18 characters |
| Spectrum | Digits only | Exactly 10 characters |
| Cricket | Digits only | Exactly 9 characters |
| Metro by T-Mobile | Digits only | Exactly 9 characters |
| T-Mobile | Digits only | 7–15 characters |
Notes:
- Verizon prepaid account numbers may begin with a letter followed by digits (e.g. "A" + 11 digits). Alphanumeric input should be accepted.
- Verizon postpaid account numbers frequently begin with a leading zero — do not strip or block these.
- Account numbers are distinct from transfer PINs and billing PINs. Validation rules above apply to account number fields only.
